If you want to use the /etc/passwd file, you will need to set getty to answer the line as usual but, as a dail-in line. Then they will get a login prompt as you expect. Make their shell the ppp program, and it will then initiate the negotiation for the ppp connection. You said that you were using win95. I have been told that it uses pa only, but have not tested that myself. If that is true, you will need to use the pap-secrets file for authentication. hence requiring two sets of passwd files. I have tried and tried, but can not get the -login setting to work in the options file. It will not use the /etc/passwd for authentication. Sucks don't it! /etc/ttys (partial) ttyd0 "/usr/libexec/getty std.57600" dialup on secure instead of: ttyd0 "/usr/sbin/pppd 57600" dailup of insecure The last works, but only with a -secrets file. The first works, but prompts for a login prompt, and I ask the user then to type ppp at that prompt to initiate ppp. I am told that you can make their shell ppp instead of sh/csh (or whatever you use), but since it does not work anyhow without the secrets file, I abandonded that plan so did not test any further.
