Strange problems like this which are triggered by hard : work are often traced to dodgy RAM, which won't always be found : by "lesser" OSs. Try swapping some SIMMs and looking at the : results. The specific nature of your problems also suggest a : problem with swap, could the HD or controller used for swap be : problematic?
