I am have used UNIX on the end user side for several years. I am trying
to learn more about UNIX system administration, so I thought the best way
would be to convert my old IIcx into a NetBSD box and play with it. I am
very new to the underlkyign structure of UNIX and am not a programmer.

I can boot in single user mode, but when I try to boot in normal
multi-user mode, I get a kernel panic every time.

Here is my hardware setup:

Macintosh IIcx
CPU:  030/16 with FPU
RAM:  8MB
HD: 60MB root partition with 18MB swap partition
Video: Apple Macintosh II video card
NetBSD version:  1.1 binaries

The error messages seem to vary between two cases:

*** Case 1 ***

sd0(ncrscsi:0:0:0): error code 54 at
      block no. 1280 (decimal)
sd0(ncrscsi:0:0:0): illegal request, data =
      00 00 00 00 25 00 00 00 00 00
{ ... repeats many times ... }

Bus error - core dumped

mode = 0140666, inum = 1699, fs = /
panic:  ffs_valloc: dup alloc
