hi.

i've run into a problem that i've seen before, but can't fix. hopefully someone out there can help me!

i've a mips box running RISCos 5.0 (a version of bsd), and i can not login to any accounts that have a password, nor can i change the passwords of any accounts. when i try to envoke `passwd` . i'm promted for the user name, but as soon as i type the user name and press <return>, i'm bumped out of 'passwd' and an entry is made in the /etc/passwd file. conversely, when i try to loggin to as any user with a passwd, i can type in the user name, but as soon as i hit <return>, i'm bumped out of of the l

and get back 'invalid user name or password'.

i've tried replacing the passwd binary and tried a fresh /etc/passwd as well.
help me, anybody! i can't figure this one out.

thanks
