I mounted a DOS filesystem a blew the machine up (ok, ok, it worked before for me - looks like big partitions tickle the bug harder!) - time for a restore. The bad bit is every time I try to read my tapes (4/8Gb HP DAT drive), I get a SCSI reset sent to the tape drive (after some time) followed by a pile of "oops not queued" messages - I assume the "oops not queued" is because the adapter is waiting for the device to re-initialise. When I backup, I use tar - w/ nothing "smart" going on, and to a tar -t to make sure things look ok..... things looked ok, but that was through the 1542B - not the 2940W. My question is, is this likely to be the change of adapter ? I know that you can get lucky and need to reformat disks when you change the adapter, but tapes ? Anyone know ? Unfortunately, I can't get the 1542B working on the new machine (to try the tape drive through that) - it detects all the SCSI devices - through the 1542B, but when the machine tries to fsck -p, the kernel times out waiting for a response from the first disk (in fact, no disks will respond) - I've tried tweaking the DMA channel to 5/6/7 - no luck (I havn't tried the IRQ though). I've got bounce buffers (lots of memory) compiled in. The nasty bit is that I can't seem to configure the PCI bus on this machine - so I don't know if anything's conflicting... time to ring Dell :( -- Brian <brian@awfulhak.demon.co.uk> Don't _EVER_ lose your sense of humour....
