I can't quote the exact error as : the SCSI hangs before the logfile can be updated. : The error is something like: : ahc0,0: Device timeout while....... : ahc0,0: Forcing..... : ahc0,0: Channel A reset. : and some messages about sd0. So for some reason it is causing sd0 to : timeout (or at least the SCSI channel to it). : The card is an Adaptec-2940 PCI and I am running 2.1.5-RELEASE. [.....] Sounds like my problems.... but only w/ the tape. The drive was fine using a 1542B, but gives these errors on a 2940W - followed by a pile of "oops not queued" messages. I haven't tried writing the tape yet - just reading what I wrote and read successfully with the 1542. Of course, at the same time, one of my SCSI disks ran out of bad sector remap space..... it took me quite some time to figure out, and of course it's my biggest disk. That coupled w/ a broken tape backup device and the inability to use my old 1542B........ ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH ! *AND* I hit the msdosfs bug and lost /etc/ppp /etc/namedb /usr/X11R6/lib and guess what...... /etc/sysconfig ! I managed to restore everything except sysconfig (easy to rewrite) from a 2 month old tape - it didn't SCSI reset at all, but then, trying to restore /etc/sysconfig in a different session from the same tape bombed out w/ the above... It *really* sounds a bit like termination - or bad cableing, I have only one cable that'll plug into the back of the 2940W.... and I'm not buying another until someone sells me one that screws in ! I suppose I could try to attach using an internal cable.... I'm sure the termination is ok, but the termination power..... hmmm dunno. Anyway, what a pain in the ass ! -- Brian <brian@awfulhak.demon.co.uk> Don't _EVER_ lose your sense of humour....
