I also ran into problems with my Adaptec 1542CF a while back, but a new BIOS from the manufacturer fixed everything. Try this before going off the deep-end. You have to call a first-generation automatic tech support robot and answer a few dozen silly questions to get to speak to a tech support with a pulse who will send you the BIOS.
