This tape normally holds 2 GB uncompressed and up to
8 GB compressed data (according to HP or Sony etc.).

Actually when used in a BSD/OS system you won't never
get 8 MB on your tape - I doubt you get 4 MB on the 
tape - as you will already have compressed files on
your disks and these won't get compressed any more
by the streamer.
I'm using 2 GB as parameter on a HP35480/90m DAT not
taking any advantage of the compression capabilities
of the streamer - but I prefer having reliable unatten-
ded backups vs. gaining some MB more on the tape...

Since many years I use

 ``dump 0uBf 2033646 /dev/nrst. /dev/sd..''

in a script.
It works and the backups saved me some/many :-) times
from big trouble.
