Don't know about Hitachi, but I have used at least 3 different brands of
ATAPI CDROM without problems, either post or pre install.  

However...
The FreeBSD CDROM must be in the drive during the installation boot-up, or
it will see the drive, but will not mount it (which I don't think you can
do during install).  You must also use a boot disk.  I personally have not
been able to use the ATAPI.BAT file off the FreeBSD CDROM.

After installation and reboot, you must manually remount the drive ala

mount_cd9660 /dev/wcd0c /cdrom

The drives I have tested are Chinon 4X,  The Creative Labs 4X (comes with
soundblaster kit), and the Computer City U.S. Logic 4X models.  All work
flawlessly with 2.1R and 2.1.5.
