The only thing wrong with gated is the command syntax keeps changing. 
Once you get the hang of it and can find some docs that have examples that
look something like the real thing, it's pretty easy to manage.  It has a
decent implementation of OSPF which I prefer over RIPv2.

BTW:  Can gated send RIPv2 or OSPF over PPP links?
