Someone a while back said that gated's configuration is too hairy.
While that CAN be true, I use the following gated.conf file on my
laptop. Basically it does what routed _ought_ to do if it were a
bit more clever:

---
RIP yes;
HELLO no;
---

That's not too hard, is it? :-)

It notices the default route that pppd puts in and keeps it, and it
notices that the Ethernet card is present if it pops back in and listens
for RIP (which will tell it about the default route on the at-home net).
