Its as slow as a pig :) check

  http://www.imforei.apana.org.au/freebsd/freebsd+cap/

there is a patch from the author of CAP that should provide
a speed increase to the "useable" level.. but speed will probably
 still suck a little..

Yup... I attempted to get this working on FreeBSD-2.1.0 and
2.1.5 systems but got a bit lost... in the end i installed
a FreeBSD 2.2-current, which has kernel appletalk support,
and a "hacked" version of netatalk for freebsd.

I "believe" that the netatalk homepage has some info on
freebsd on 2.1.x systems... might pay to check that out.

From my point of view, where i have one freebsd system, and one
mac IIcx on a bit of ethernet, both netatalk and freebsd seem
to perform at about the same speed... nothing brilliant, but
 it works.
