If you value your time, I would not suggest you try to go too
far in pursuing the conflicting goals of a large number of virtual
web servers and extremely fast performance.

If you are good enough to squeeze the last ounce of performance 
out of a lowly $8,000.00 web server, then it is not worthy of 
your skills to do so.

Seperate those getting the millions of hits per day from those
that don't.  If someone is doing 4 million hits per day and yet
cannot afford their own server, something is wrong with the basic
economic model, not the O/S that serves the pages.  If someone
is getting 4 million hits per day and is not paying a significant
amount of money, then someone else is paying for the access and
the whole deal is so out-of-whack that you won't find it stable
for the long-term.

As a research and educational issue, I can see the merit. As a
commercial issue, it sounds like a black-hole.
