As keymap for the syscons console driver I am using "german.iso". The Umlaut-Keys should give then the correct ISO chars. But in an xterm window, these keys aren't recognized. Pressing them results in no reaction. When using the "german.cp850" keymap, it gives DOS- Umlauts in the syscons screen and strange characters in an xterm window (d, | and \). Seems to be the missing bit 7 (8th bit). stty -a gives however cs8. So my questions: 1) How to enter ISO Umlauts under Xfree86? 2) Why xterm only prints 7 bit characters? eightBitInput and eightBitOutput are set to "true" in the app-defaults for xterm (XTerm).
