I'm using keymap="german.cp850" in /etc/sysconfig, which matches
my German keyboard a whole lot better.

Here is my environment so far:
LANG=de_DE.ISO_8859-1

And I have no problems to get äöü in an xterm and a vi session
for example... I'm running FreeBSD-current

Don't know, which special settings I did, if I look at my
environment, nothing special. It simply works.

As far as I know, XFree86 gets the keymappings or such from
syscons ... So choose the correct keyboard mapping as mentioned
above and it should work.
