Easy - somewhere in your /etc/XF86Config is a line reading

	virtual	1152	900

or something similar - I use Accelerated X instead of XFree86.

Change that to your actual resolution and there you go.
If I remember correctly, there's even a comment somewhere in the file
stating, that virtual resolution higher than your screen size could be
especially confusing for users of window managers with virtual screens,
and recommending to turn it off.
