check your tty isn't sending a <cr><lf> instead of just a <lf>.

what would happen if this was the case is exactly what is happening to you.

e.g. 

SunOS (kjhsgf)

login: username<cr>
Password:<lf>
Login incorrect.
login:

-- etc --

If the username didn't have a password it would look like:

SunOS (kjhsgf)

login: username<cr>

username@kjhsgf:1:<lf>
username@kjhsgf:1:
