I was thinking just today that if performance becomes an issue on my own web server, I could try installing thttpd for certain sections of the server that don't require Apache's features, and have references go towards that server's port. For example, got a bunch of relatively static pages, with no server-side includes or CGIs, that sit around in the /gfx/ hierarchy ... the big thing is these are series of images, with each index.html calling upon a number thumbnail inlines as well ... the sort of thing thttpd would excel at, many multiple requests at once. Just assign the appropriate tool to the appropriate job ... I suppose an ISP could maybe even sell 2 classes of webaccount, one with Apache's features, and a cheaper one running thttpd for a slight discount. That seems perhaps a bit overzealous to me though.
