Here's a timeline:

9501 9506 9601 9608 9612
2.0 ----- 2.0.5 ------ 2.1 ------ 2.1.5 ------ 2.1.6 --- *end* [STABLE]
            |
            |
[CURRENT]   +----------> ... 2.2 SNAPS ... -----------------> 2.2 --->
                         9509 - 9608 - ... 9702

Where YYMM is the release date (or projected release date) at the top
and the release name is below.

As you can see from the diagram, there are also two branches of FreeBSD
development - "stable" and "current", the reasons for this all being
explained at http://www.freebsd.org/handbook so I won't go into the
details here. The 2.2-SNAPs are also described at
http://www.freebsd.org/releases/snapshots.html and, once you read those
two documents, you'll see that what you've got are essentially two
different products, the SNAP CD also meant more as a developers resource
than an actual released product (as it says on the cover "only for those
who want to easily track the state of FreeBSD's development"). For
those who dislike life on the bleeding edge, the 2.1.5 CD set represents
our most recent offering on CD and will remain so until the 2.1.6 CD is
released (containing exclusively bug fixes for 2.1.5).
