I have had a fair amount of computer knowledge. I was wanting to do the same thing start up as an isp. Three months ago I got serious about it. Never had picked up a Linux book or used unix. Decided on going with Linux. The equipment I use is a cysco 2501 router, portmaster 30, a kentrox DSU CSU, bocca 28,800 external modems, a pentium 166 with 64 megs for my Linux server to handle e-mail, web pages, apache software for web pages. Got a T1 line from local phone company to a service provider, starting with 128k bandwidth. I'm not saying this is a simple task by no means. But if you have good computer knowledge and like working all the time I suggest buying the book Linux Secrets by Naba Barkakati published by IDG Books. Read it and see if it makes any since if it does go for it. If not hire someone to do it for you. The equipment such as the router and the portmaster most providers will help you set them up free as part of buying service from them. I would not get into a long contract with a provider that is just my thouhts though. As far as total money for your equipment it depends on how many lines you want to start with and big of a local network you start with, we spend around 25,000 dollars for everything including setup for the lines and T1 and first, Russ russ@eastland.net If you run linux you can post you questions in the linux forums and the people are great in here. Ps we have been up now for 27 days things going great. Linux is cool.
