It has been my unfortunate experience that Barracuda drives are very sensitive to heat and voltage (low line voltage). If you manage to find external enclosures with good cooling charactaristics and clean power supplies 'cudas seem to work just great. As for Maxtor drives, I've always had problems with them...both in IDE and SCSI dress.
