It is worth investigating what happens when you use another version of the firmware _inside_ the Exabyte. I've been using an "EXABYTE EXB-8200 2687" from FreeBSD 2.0.5 (maybe even earlier) without any problems. Exabyte has produced a fair number of different firmware versions for the 8200 over time.
