ppp is the iijppp program - the user-level ppp & uses the tun device.
pppd is the kernel-level ppp and uses the ppp device.

Each uses different config files.  For dialing out, ppp is best because
it allows dialup chat scripts.  A lot of people prefer pppd for dialin,
although I use ppp for both.  The ppp man page is pretty good, and there
are examples in /etc/ppp/.
