This sudden dying has not occured the last few days, so I hope it's gone. But more likely it's just waiting for me to start some important work before it makes its move.. I do have parity memory (I think my motherboard requires it), so I hope FreeBSD would catch DRAM failures, or at least give some message about it on the console. I do use write-back cache, and I did see something in the FAQ or handbook about my chipset (saturn <some numer> rev. 3) being buggy with respect to wb-cache. This did however not seem to affect linux, which has been installed on the same machine for some time. I'll change to write-through next time it hangs (knock wood, eh?). I'm reluctant to change because of the (although not large) performance penalty I think this would cause. I was in fact messing with my scsi-setup and having some trouble with termination (turned out my cdrom was internally terminated without my knowing), so this is a plausible reason too. Last, I discovered an IRQ collision between two ISA devices (sb and lp) that I now have fixed. Don't know if simple devices like these can cause the kernel to hang though..? I have not overclocked the CPU beyond its specifications, it's an AMDdx4-100 externally fed 33MHz. All in all, I guess the FreeBSD kernel is "in the clear".. :-) I'm very satisfied with this system.
