Your X may be trying to resolve some hostnames (like it's own),
and, if your /etc/host.conf is untouched, it will try the DNS server
first.  The server, that can not be reached, because your ppp is
down.

Of course, this should not happen normally -- such attempt should
fail immediately if ppp is not running, but hey, there may be
something else broken :)

Change your /etc/host.conf so, that hosts are first looked up in
/etc/hosts (which is always there), and only then the DNS server
is asked (which is only available during ppp-session).

Just something I'd check first...
