Oops!  I meant to follow up to the news group but replied to the
poster instead.  Here's what I sent:

This doesn't sound like what I experienced so maybe my problem is
different.

Some background:

I had been running 2.1.0 but, due to a problem, the vendor of my
system sent a replacement disk with 2.1.5 installed.  Now dmesg
says this about psm:

psm0: disabled, not probed.

And, of course, when I try to run X, it complains about the mouse
not being configured or something like that.

It (dmesg) used to say:

psm0 at 0x60-0x63 irq 12 on motherboard

I'm not familiar enough with how this all works to figure out
what's going on so I will be very grateful for any help.
