Don't use 10.0.0.0  More than likely that is confusing your machine.
Start numbering at 10.0.0.1 or even higher... 
If you're not running DNS, be sure to list eachother in /etc/hosts
If they still can't see eachother post results of these commands from
each machine:
ifconfig -a
netstat -nr
Are you getting connect lights at the ether-hub?
