I have an old, working, mostly OK BSDI 1.1 system that I would like to
leave as intact as possible. I would like to make it faster.

I attempted to replace the 486DX50 motherboard this weekend with a
P5 motherboard (TYAN Tomcat with 5 ISA/4 PCI) and move all the ISA boards
over. I tried about a zillion things:

    P5 75MHz, P5 133MHz (I had two)
parameter frobbing (ISA clock, wait states, etc.)
leaving out all but the disk and video cards
    shorter scsi chain
different RAM, drives, different cables, etc.

and I kept on getting various varieties of apparent SCSI error. I get the
farthest with one peripheral on the SCSI chain; this, of course, results
in problems when the missing disks are sought. With two SCSI peripherals,
the system locks up during the peripheral identification portion of the boot:

   aha0 at isa0 iobase 0x330 irq 14 drq 5: unknown type F0 Adaptec card rev F0
aha0: delaying to permit certain devices to finish self-test
   aha0: bus transfer 5 Mb/s, bus on/off 8/4 us
   tg0 at aha0 target 0
   sd0 at tg0 unit 0: SEAGATE ST43400N rev 1028 (SCSI-2) 5688447*512
   tg1 at aha0 target 2
   sd1 at tg1 u

and there it hangs. That's with the P5-75, the P5-133 quits before even
starting the boot. The identically configured 1542CP works fine with
the 486/50 (I am using it now). The variable is the P5 and motherboard.

So what gotchas lurk in configuring P5 systems? Ideas?

Yes, I have BSDI 2.0 and no I don't want to use it - the new X windows
stuff doesn't work with my strange video setup. I've got a functional
kludge and I would like to keep it, just speed it up.

Keith

(PS, BSDI - I probably should send you folks some support bucks and ask you
these questions, but I fear the "just switch to 2.1 and no, we don't support
X386-SGCS, the ATI Ultra 8514, the Digiboard PC/8E ..." response. )
