For a real scientific use of the : system, not just for fun, a fortran compiler is necessary. I have f2c ported which I've used to port spice2g6. Currently I'm trying to port chipmunk CAD, later magic then ext2spice. What do you mean by serious scientific use? If you want really heavy number crunching, 486 is not up to it yet.
