Boy, do I feel dumb!  I looked at the kernel configuration file and
never even saw that "disable" nestled there among all the other
parameters on the psm line...  :(

Anyway, my heartfelt thanks to all who helped.

But stand by--I'll have some other questions on some other topics
as soon as I have time to type them in.
