Going to SCSI-2 from SCSI -1, Going to Wide SCSI from Fast, going to a PCI SCSI card from an ISA, going to multiple SCSI cards from a single card, etc etc. 2) make sure you have compiled with dbz, not dbm or ndbm and friends. 3) Run ps in it's various incantations and make sure your not paging during all activities of the system, if so add ram. 4) you can sometimes batch stuff, for example do your expiring during the slowest time of the day, etc.
