This worked for me with v2.1. Please try the:
chmod 444 fonts.dir
command.

Java applets fail to display. Type this as root, after exiting
netscape.:
cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc
/usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir
chmod 444 fonts.dir
Do this as a regular user or restart the X server:
xset fp rehash
