You've already got two hints, here's a third one: dump(8).

E.g., my FreeBSD system at home runs this one every night via cron:

	/sbin/dump 0uBbf 1000000 32 /dev/rst0 /home

(It's a 2.5 Gig Tandberg drive with a 1 GB cartridge in it during the
night hours.)
