I too have Netscape 3.0 and FreeBSD 2.1R, and have the following:

	setenv CLASSPATH /usr/local/netscape/java/classes/java_30

and, I have cd'd to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc, and run mkfontdir.

The permissions to all these directories and files are world read and
execute.

I also am unable to get Netscape 3.0 to run or display anything about
Java, although JavaScript works fine.

AArrggh! This is the only roadblock to my office taking that vile virus
called Windows 95 off our systems, and using FreeBSD (the One True OS)
exclusively...
