Problem solved!!!! Turned out that I wasn't aware that FreeBSD kept it's XF86Config file in /etc. I had changed the mouse entry in the one in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11. Incidentaly I used the Scroll Lock trick to look back at a previous screen to see waht was going on.
