Fogarty (chaos@wsg.net) had the courage to say: : Hello all, : I am looking for some help in setting up the rarpd daemon on my : 2.1-Release box (my 2.1.5-R will be getting it ass soon as I have it : working on the 2.1). I have read the man pages but they weren't very : helpful in actually getting things to work right. I got the daemon : running no problem but I can't seem to set up /etc/ethers up right or : else I screwed up something else. Everytime I telnet to a foreign site : I am shown as logging in from my IP address rather than from my : machine's name. HELP! : Anybody got this working who can give me some pointers? : Your comments are greatly appreciated!! : Sincerely, : Dave You have _completely_ misunderstood the nature of RARP. What you're talking about is not RARP: it's DNS. RARP has nothing to do with other hosts being able to resolve your IP address into a hostname. Since I doubt very much that you run your own DNS server, I suggest you talk to your ISP and ask them to make sure your IP address and hostname are properly registered. This is their problem: nothing you can do will make any difference. -Bill -- ============================================================================= -Bill Paul (212) 854-6020 | System Manager, Master of Unix-Fu Work: wpaul@ctr.columbia.edu | Center for Telecommunications Research Home: wpaul@skynet.ctr.columbia.edu | Columbia University, New York City ============================================================================= "If you're ever in trouble, go to the CTR.
