First of all, xdm runs fine from the command line with the default
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers configuration:

:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X

Trying to invoke it at the end of rc.local, however, I've encountered
nothing but problems. Basically, the results I've gotten so far with
this are either xdm fails to run altogether, or it runs, but the login
screen is unuseable (no keyboard input).

Referring to the FAQ, I changed the Xservers line to read:

:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt0b -wm
                             ^^^^
I suspect this may be the problem. Is this the correct way to specify
ttyvb (my last, and "off" terminal)? Or should I use the decimal form
"vt11"? Or is there something else I should be doing as well?

I've even tried commenting out ttyvb in /etc/ttys, thinking it may be
causing some conflict, but this didn't help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd really like to be able to boot
right into X.

Thanks.
