Yes, I had the same problems when I once used a Mac notepad -- I'll
never do it again, but there is a very helpful tool which lets you read
and write HFS (Mac) filesystems. There is a tcl/tk interface as well!

The package is called `hfsutils' by Robert Leslie <rob@mars.org>. It
wasn't easy to locate, my version is `hfsutils-1.16b.tar.gz' which
should be locatable with archie.
