FreeBSD 2.0 is really obsolete.

Since you tell that this started only recently, it's most likely
indeed hardware.  Btw., ``ecc_cor'' --> your drive tells you that it
required ECC correction in order to recover your data.

You should probably quickly look for a dump tape. ;)

Maybe a real low-level format (with some utility from your hard disk
vendor) might cause the drive to re-establish and extend its bad
sector table, so you would see a clean drive again afterwards.
