I have all the info requested when I I ran into the same problem, the documentation producers for Xfree put a few tricks in for the newcomer! ;-) Buried somewhere in the docs is the magic key sequence: Cntl-Alt, + Which when the plus key is tapped repeatedly will cycle through all the screen resolutions. Your probably running with a so-called "virtual" screen resolution of 1024x768 on an actual screen resolution of 640x480. Myself, I hated this feature as soon as I figured out what they were doing. Doing the Cntl-Alt-+ thing will get you to an actual resolution of something reasonable for running X (query, are there really people who plan on running X at 640x480?!?!) and will give you the normal login screen. You have to hold the cursor over the window to be able to type into it, if you did so you probably could have logged in.
