FAQ's and mailing list archives are a godsend, but not this time. I've installed fbsd 2.1.5 and configured XFree86 3.1.2 from cdrom. I'm using a #9 Motion 771, 2M VRAM, configured in /etc/XF86Config per all the info available (see message from startx attached below for details; why is my OS identified as FreeBSD 2.0.5?). The problem: no text in the console or xterm windows!! I have a cursor that moves with my mouse, and if I move to the console I can type commands that get run (like exit) with no problem. I can see lines here and there that indicate typing activity, but I can't see the actual text. If I click a mouse button (any of the three), the familiar menus appear, complete with text, but when I move the cursor down to any item, the text disappears for that item. What's going on?? Thanks in advance. Please email if you also post; the mail server on campus is flaky with this newsgroup for some reason. ------------------------------------------- output from startx: XFree86 Version 3.1.2 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6001) Operating System: FreeBSD 2.0.5 Configured drivers: S3: accelerated server for S3 graphics adaptors (Patchlevel 0) mmio_928, s3_generic Using syscons driver with X support (version 2.0) (using VT number 4) XF86Config: /etc/XF86Config (**) stands for supplied, (--) stands for probed/default values (**) Mouse: type: MouseSystems, device: /dev/mouse, baudrate: 1200 (**) S3: Graphics device ID: "Number Nine FX Motion 771" (**) S3: Monitor ID: "CTX-1561" (**) FontPath set to "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,/usr/X11R6/l ib/ /X11/fonts/Speedo/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ 100 0dpi/" (--) S3: card type: PCI (--) S3: chipset: 968 rev. 31 (--) S3: chipset driver: mmio_928 (**) S3: videoram: 2048k (**) S3: Ramdac type: ibm_rgb524 (**) S3: Ramdac speed: 220 (--) S3: Using hardware cursor from IBM RGB52x RAMDAC (--) S3: #9 Motion 771 BIOS found (**) S3: Using IBM RGB52x programmable clock (MCLK 60.000 MHz) (**) S3: with refclock 16.000 MHz (probed 16.112 & 15.956) (--) S3: Maximum allowed dot-clock: 220.000 MHz (**) S3: Mode "1024x768": mode clock = 75.000 (--) S3: Operating RAMDAC in pixel multiplex mode (**) S3: Using 16 bpp. Color weight: 565 (--) S3: Virtual resolution set to 1024x768 (--) S3: Local bus LAW is 0xF3000000 (--) S3: Using a banksize of 2048k, line width of 1024 (--) S3: Using a single 64x64 area at (960,768) for expanding pixmaps (--) S3: Using 16 planes of 960x256 at (0,768) aligned 8 as font cache -- Ernest Hymel ehymel@utmb.edu
