No, the cd-rom can be read easily under DOS on the E: drive, and its install.exe can start up the freeBSD install. It is just that when I get to the "media" part of the install (with options to cd, ftp, etc) that it thinks there is no cd there. Another faculty was reported to have the same problem, and it was supposed to have to do with the exact type of cd-rom. Mine is a sony 2-speed that came with my Quantex Pentium in 1995.
