You should find out why this occurs. It might be
shortage of memory or shortage of some table space.
(unlikely since you increased maxusers by 10)

bsd/os 2.0 had a vm flaw that could consume memory
under certain conditions. According to bsdi this
is fixed in 2.1.

It might also be "zombies" piling up consuming system
resources.

In short: find out what is consuming which resources,then
a fix is likely to be found.

O'reilly has a nice book "system performance tuning" where
a lot of this info can be learned.
