You can always use gdb which comes with 386bsd [and a fine debugger it is]
I personally prefer to use xxgdb i.e. the X-inteface to the debugger and
it works fine. I can't really remember what changes were needed to make 
xxgdb to work but I am sure they are minor.
You can find copy of the latest gdb and xxgdb in 
src.doc.ic.ac.uk:/gnu/....
