I had previously been able to get workman to play music CDs. After reinstallation, I cannot. Background: The sound stuff had not been installed on the new disk when it arrived from SWT (i.e. in the kernel config file) so I added it from LINT and rebuilt the kernel. Then I had various problems when I tried to run cdplay or xcdplayer. But then I discovered workman and when first I ran that it suggested that I change permissions on (I think) /dev/snd0 which I did according to it's suggestion. After that, it worked fine. Until I reinstalled FBSD. I'm using the same kernel configuration file that I had done before but when I run workman it comes up claiming no CD in drive. If I click on "CD Info" the popup is all grayed out as are other popups that relate to the CD. All of that worked before I reinstalled FBSD. I rebuilt the kernel after reinstallation from the same kernel configuration file that I had used before. Oddly, even though this is in my kernel config file: controller snd0 device sb0 at isa? port 0x220 irq 5 drq 1 vector sbintr device sbxvi0 at isa? drq 5 device sbmidi0 at isa? port 0x330 device opl0 at isa? port 0x388 there is no snd0 line in either dmesg output or in /var/log/messages. It's right before the pseudodevice stuff. I would think that I'd screwed up if it hadn't worked before I reinstalled FBSD. I have tried remaking the device(s) with MAKEDEV but there is still no /dev/snd0, only /dev/sndstat. I guess that makes some sense in light of the absence of a snd0 line in the boot messages. I assume that that is the problem but I don't know what to do about it. The CD drive seems to work OK for data. I can mount /cdrom and install packages--I just did a few minutes ago with a package that I'd forgotten that I need. Also, I seem to recall that there was a /dev/audio that could be used through the SB speakers (e.g. cat file.au > /dev/audio) but it also doesn't exist and MAKEDEV says that there's no such device name so I assume that it was a symbolic link to something. Thanks for any suggestions. I've looked through the handbook and the FAQ but have found nothing helpful. I read the file, /usr/src/sys/i386/isa/sound/sound.doc but still no help. Please let me know if I can provide any further information. Thanks for any help. -- Best, Charlie "Older than dirt" Sorsby "I'm the NRA!" crs@swcp.com crs@hamlet.lanl.gov Life Member since 1965
