A much simpler solution: Buy a copy of eXceed for windows - from eXcite,
( or vice versa ).  It will give you as much X as you really want on your
win95 machine.  I know from personal experience that it handles direct LAN
connectivity  ( wfwg and win95 ) to unix boxes running samba, and I would
try win95's dial-up-networking facility for my first shot at the async
connection you have available.
