Since you posted to the freebsd newsgroup, you're probably going to get a lot of "okay then, use freebsd..." which is certainly valid advice because freebsd _is_ an excellent OS. You'll probably want to download or purchase a distribution from download: ftp://ftp.freebsd.org, OR purchase: http://www.infomagic.com The base freebsd installation is approx 45-60M (I have forgotten the exact size), and includes basically everything you need: compilers, perl, etc etc etc. If you want an editor, you'll have to install the Emacs package which is included with the CD-ROM distribution (NOTE: you'll have to download the package if you're installing via download).
