Yes the ISP times out and drops the pone line. This causes the CD light to go off of course. I am left with a modem that is connected to a dead phone line (after Ma Bell times out with anoying noisy messages). The of course I can't dial back out since I need an transition on the off hook switch. My modem has a feature where I can make tit time out on this condition, but the time out is in 10ths of hours so the minimum I can set is 6 minutes. I ahve an identical modem working with another machine an kermit. Kermit hangs up the phone when it disconects. How do I make ppp (yes I'm using -auto) do this ? Yhe device I am using ins /dev/cuaa0.
