I've tried a few ; the bsd popper tends to hang sessions now and then.
I also tried the one which is part of imapd (or the PINE distribution).
This works fine, but behaves bizarrely, inserting a special mail message in
 the mailbox file to hold status information (pine ignores this, other stuff
does not.) Finally we settled on the qualcomm (eudora folks) popper, which
has worked very well.
