NEC, a worldwide leader in multimedia technologies, was a pioneer in the standardization of SOCKS (http://www.socks.nec.com) as an open network security protocol. In addition to providing easy-to-implement network security capabilities, NEC's new SOCKS5Toolkit offerings perform network administration, monitoring, detection and alarm, logging and usage analysis for Internet and intranet environments on a cost effective basis. SOCKS is a proxy communication protocol originally conceived to manage secure data transfer in client/server environments. Because of its flexible and efficient configuration, SOCKS has been widely used in firewall and proxy server applications. NEC's own SOCKS version 4 quickly caught on as an industry standard across the world. As a result of this success NEC developed the new SOCKS5(TM) which recently became IETF-approved. Aside from providing secure network proxy service, SOCKS5Toolkit products can also be used in various Internet applications by Internet commerce including on-line service providers, electronic publishers, electronic merchants and Internet access providers for auditing, control, account management and authorization procedures. NEC USA recently teamed up with Aventail, a developer of next-generation Internet security systems. Under an agreement, NEC licensed to Aventail its SOCKS5 proxy communication technology and SOCKS5Toolkit products. In the near future, Aventail will build powerful client/server Internet security systems utilizing the advanced features in SOCKS5. These products will be available to OEM and corporate customers.
